Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington commits suicide, aged 41

Chester Bennington, the ferocious lead singer for the platinum-selling hard rock band Linkin Park, was found dead in his home near Los Angeles on Thursday. He was 41.

His death at his private residence in Palos Verdes Estates in Los Angeles County at approximately 9am Thursday morning was confirmed by the coroner and is being treated as a suspected suicide.

Bennington, joined the group in 1999 and became a household name the year after with the release of the band’s debut album Hybrid Theory, which was nominated for a Grammy award for best rock album.

Spokesman Brian Elias said the death was being handled as an apparent suicide, and celebrity website TMZ, citing law enforcement sources, said Bennington had hung himself while alone at the house when his family was out of town.

Bennington had a history of alcohol and drug abuse. He spoke openly in the past about his struggles to overcome his demons when Linkin Park first found fame in 2000 with their best-selling debut album “Hybrid Theory” and went on to become one of the most popular alt-rock bands of their generation.

Bennington’s death came a week before the band was due to kick off the US leg of the tour on July 27 in Mansfield, Massachusetts. It also came the same day as the release of Linkin Park’s music video “Talking to Myself.”

In 2008, a woman was jailed for two years for stalking Bennington and Talinda. Bennington married Talinda, a former Playboy model, on December 31, 2005. They have three children — Tyler Lee Bennington and twins Lilly and Lila.

He was previously married to Samantha Marie Olit and got divorced in 2005. They have one child together, Draven Sebastian Bennington.
