Actor Shashi Kapoor, who has ruled Hindi cinema and won hearts of several people, is no longer in this world. The actor breathed his last at Kolkilaben Ambani Hospital on December 4, 2017 around 5.20 pm. The 79-year-old actor passed away after a prolonged illness.
Shashi Kapoor had been suffering from a kidney ailment and had been undergoing dialysis. Mr Kapoor had been in a wheelchair for years.
1. Jennifer Kendal (wife)
In July 1958, he married the English actress Jennifer Kendal and they acted in a number of films together, most notably in the Merchant Ivory productions. He had three children with Kendal; Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor and Sanjana Kapoor all of whom for a short while became film actors. Kendal died of cancer in 1984.
The veteran actor met theatre actress Jennifer Kendal in Kolkata in 1956 while working with their respective theater groups. Soon after, they decided to get married. But Jennifer’s family was not happy with this relationship. In 1958, the duo tied the knot. Jennifer Kendal was a noted theatre and film actress and was part of films like ’36 Chowringhee Lane’ and ‘Junoon’. The actress died in 1984, which left Shashi Kapoor “heartbroken,” says a family friend.
2. Kunal Kapoor (Elder Son)
Kunal Kapoor is an elder son of Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal. In 1981 he appeared in his first mainstream Bollywood film titled Ahista Ahistaopposite Padmini Kolhapure. In 1982 he appeared in Vijeta. After that he appeared in the art films Utsav (1984) and Trikal (1985). Trikal was his last film appearance.
Kunal later quit acting and set up his own company, Adfilm-Valas, and started producing and directing television commercials. Adfilm Valas has also line-produced for many international feature films and ad films shot in India. In 2015 he returned to films after 30 years, appearing in Singh is Bling as Amy Jackson’s father.
Kunal was married to filmmaker Ramesh Sippy’s daughter Sheena, a well known photographer (the lady on the left). The couple have two children together, Shaira and Zahan. Kunal and Sheena are now divorced.
3. Karan Kapoor (Younger son)
Karan Kapoor is a younger son of Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal. He is a well known model and actor in the early 1980s. Karan Kapoor is best remembered for his role in ‘Sultanat’ which featured Juhi Chawla as his female lead. He was also seen in Loha, 36 Chowringhee Lane, Junoon and Zalzala, apart from The Jewel in the Crown and The Tooting Lions on TV. He got more movies due to father Shashi Kapoor’s stardom but he couldn’t make his mark in bollywood.
Karan later quit acting and he later moved towards photography and decided to be a part of this profession. He is now an established photographer in London.
In an earlier interview, Karan said that he was always interested in photography since his childhood even though being a part of very famous Bollywood family of Kapoors. Now, he lives in Chelsea, London with his wife Lorna, his daughter Aliya, and Zach, his son.
4. Sanjana Kapoor (Daughter)
Sanjana is an Indian theatre personality and former Indian film actress of British and Indian descent.She ran the Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai from 1993. to February 2012.
Her career was not successful. She made her acting debut in the 1981 film 36 Chowringhee Lane which was produced by her father and starred her mother Jennifer Kendal in the lead. She played the younger version of the character her mother played. She later appeared in Utsav (1984), also produced by her father and played her first leading role in a Bollywood film titled Hero Hiralal (1988) which was however unsuccessful at the box office.
In 2011, she announced her decision to leave Prithvi Theatre, and launch her own theatre company, Junoon in 2012, which would work with travelling groups staging plays at smaller venues across India.
Sanjana was briefly married to filmmaker Aditya Bhattacharya, son of director Basu Bhattacharya. The couple got divorced and Sanjana later married conservationist and wildlife photographer Valmik Thapar. Sanjana and Valmik have a son, Hamir.
