Even before the security officials could get into action, the fan was seen sitting on his knees in front of Raina, touched the feet of his hero and seeking an autograph.

By the time security personnels reached to escort him out of the ground, the young fan shook hands with Raina and on being convinced by the skipper, he adhered to leave the field of play.

“I wanted to congratulate him for his superb fielding at slips, which led to the departure of Rishabh Pant,” said Rinku, the fan, who admitted that his intentions were very clear from the start of the match.

“I tried meeting Raina at the team hotel but couldn’t succeed despite making a number of attempts. I had my first interaction with him a few years ago during a Ranji Trophy match. Even today when I shook hands with him, I tried to remind him of our meeting in the Ranji game.”

After his meeting with Raina on Wednesday, Rinku came out of the ground while waving to the fans. “I had told my friends of such an attempt today.”

Meanwhile, to the dismay of Raina fans, his team lost the inconsequential tie by two wickets as Delhi managed to chase down the total, riding over Shreyas Iyer’s 96-unn knock, with two balls to spare. Aaron Finch scored 69 off 39 balls to take Gujarat to a total of 195/5 in the fifty overs after they were invited by Delhi skipper Zaheer Khan to bat first. Gujarat have failed to defend any total in the tournament so far.
