Bombay HC asked Maharashtra Government to justify Sanjay Dutt’s early released from jail!

The Bombay high court asked the Maharashtra government on Monday to explain why it grant Sanjay Dutt an early release from prison in relation to the 1993 serial blasts case.

Last year, in February, almost 8 months before the completion of his sentence, he was released from prison on account of “good conduct” during his stay in the Yerwada prison in Pune.

The bench of justice RM Savant and justice Sadhana Jadhav asked the government to file an affidavit detailing the “parameters considered, and the procedures followed” in arriving at the conclusion that Dutt deserved leniency.

Dutt was convicted and sentenced to five years in an arms possession case connected to the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case which he served in Yerwada Central Jail, Pune. He was released on 25 February, 2016.

“Was the DIG prisons consulted or did the jail superintendent directly send his recommendation to the governor? Isn’t there a uniform procedure followed for all prisoners who receive good conduct reports? ” the bench asked.

“Also, how did the authorities assess that Dutt’s conduct was good? When did they get the time to make such assessment when he was out on parole half the time?” he asked.

The court will further hear the matter after one week.
