The apex court, by a 3:2 majority judgment, held triple talaq being practised by the Muslim community as “unconstitutional”, “arbitrary” and “not part of Islam”.
The SC has banned the practice among Muslim community where a man could divorce his wife by saying the word “talaq” three times. As soon as the verdict was out, it became a trending topic on social media.
The order comes in response to petitions from seven Muslim women who had been divorced through triple talaq. More than 20 Muslim countries, including neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh, have banned the practice.
Many of them have been in support of the judgement. They hailed the Supreme Court for the for landmark judgement. Some Bollywood and television celebrities, too, took to Twitter and expressed their happiness. Check some of the tweets below by the B-Town celebs:
