The 61-year-old filmmaker had been facing severe financial issues since being diagnosed with the fatal disease.

Reports indicate that her monthly bill would amount to not less than Rs 2.5 lakh. Seeing this, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and director Rohit Shetty have come forward to give financial help to the filmmaker.

Lajmi’s mother told the website that her daughter was rushed to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital on Monday. She had lost one of her kidneys in surgery, and the other was infected.

Speaking to a news agency, Ashoke Pandit said, “I am associated with Indian Film and Television Director’s Association and we do approach actors and directors for financial help whenever needed. After I learnt about her health, I spoke to Aamir Khan and Rohit Shetty. Kiran (Kiran Rao, filmmaker and Aamir’s wife) met her and gave Rs six lakh,” Pandit told PTI. “Rohit Shetty has given Rs two lakh. Within 24 hours they helped her. It is very nice of them… If needed, we will talk to more people after a few months.”

Lajmi is currently stable and will be kept under observation for the next 24-48 hours. While talking to indianexpress.com from the hospital, the 61-year-old director said, “Yesterday was my husband’s (Assamese musician Bhupen Hazarika) sixth death anniversary. So, whole of the Assam held a mourning ceremony in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. I made the mistake of deciding to attend it because from past few years I have only travelled between home to hospital, I don’t go anywhere else because of my health. But yesterday I did and I think I got a heatstroke, it was so bad. When I woke up today, I felt I was sinking. So, I just took my driver and rushed to Kokilaben Hospital.”

The director was then informed that her heart rate had dropped. “All these are the unfortunate incidents that take place with the kidney patients. And I have lost both my kidneys, so, I have to be more careful.”

Ms Lajmi has been under treatment for over two years now and has required medial dialysis every week, reported PTI. In her statement, she has thanked the film industry for the immense financial support she received for her treatment and particularly mentioned Aamir and Salman Khan, Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt among others.
