The group that has led these protests, the Karni Sena, has also asked the top court to ban the film saying its makers twisted history.

Today, the Supreme Court rejected pleas by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh governments. It also dismissed a plea by the Karni Sena. “Our order must be followed by one and all. States can’t show helplessness in maintaining law and order. States have a duty to abide by SC orders. Don’t watch if you don’t want to but there can’t be a ban on screening,” the court said.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state of Rajasthan, argued before the Supreme Court today, saying, “I am not saying that allow me to ban the film,I had moved the Apex Court for certain modification of the Apex court’s earlier interim order.” To this, the Supreme Court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, observed, “People must understand that there is a statutory body, and also we have passed an order.”

The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles, is based on the saga of historic battle of 13th century between Maharaja Ratan Singh and his army of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.

The film will release on January 25.
