Few days ago, Mahesh Bhatt received an extortion call, that threatened to kill his wife Soni, and daughter Alia Bhatt if a certain amount was not given to him. The man was nabbed from Lucknow a few days later, after Mahesh lodged a complaint. The accused, named is Sandeep Sahu.
If recent reports are to be believed, the man has been released on bail.
A report in the Mumbai Mirror states that ‘overzealous cops’ arrested Sahu and later had to leave him on a bail since there was no money exchanged between the two parties and hence the case was weak. Sahu has been released on the bail of Rs 20,000 and has been asked to come once in a week to the police station to mark his attendance. A surety of two individuals close to him is taken into account.

Sahu’s lawyers, Sudha Dwivedi and Ajay Dubey, contended that the stringent Section 387(Putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion) was not applicable and it was a case of 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. “For this section of extortion to be applicable, there should be some transfer of valuable security or money, grievous hurt or injury. However, there is no such thing in the present case. The police in their overzealousness has booked him for a graver offense,” Dwivedi told Mirror. Earlier this month Bhatt had lodged a complaint with the crime branch’s anti extortion cell after allegedly receiving several ransom calls. Within 12 hours, 24-year-old Sahu was arrested in Lucknow.
According to reports, Sandeep posed as Babloo Srivastava and threatened to kill Soni and Alia if Rs 50 lakh were not transferred to his bank account. Mahesh initially thought it was a prank. But the number of calls increased, and texts and WhatsApp messages followed. Bhatt lodged a complaint with Mumbai police, and the accused was nabbed within 12 hours.
Shockingly, Mahesh Bhatt is unaware of this development and he told so to Mirror. He said, “I have no information about this, kindly talk to the anti-extortion branch of Mumbai police for details. I have filed my complaint with the Mumbai police.”
