The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday issued a show cause notice to Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor for allegedly violating its permission to trim branches of a banyan tree inside his Krishna Raj bungalow at Bandra’s Pali Hill.

A BMC official said Kapoor had last week received the civic body’s permission to trim six branches of the tree after the actor pointed out that they would obstruct the planned construction at the plot.

However, subsequent inspection revealed that the tree has been reduced to its trunk, the official said. The branches were not trimmed but chopped off, he added.

BMC will file a police complaint, for registering a case under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, and Section 155 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the official said.

Kapoor stated the contractor was hired to look after work at the site. He said he was unaware about the development and stated that he took permission for trimming the tree so that it cannot obstruct movement of heavy machines during pilling work. The tree stands in a corner of his property.

Kapoor said, “I am not supposed to be at the site all the time and am unaware about it. The contractor may have done it unintentionally, how come I am responsible for it? I am just being victimised unnecessarily time and again by some vested interests. I am seeking legal recourse to put an end to this harassment.”
