Veteran Bollywood actor, politician and former union minister Vinod Khanna passed away in Mumbai on Thursday morning following prolonged illness. He was 70. His funeral took place at a crematorium in Worli, Mumbai, in the evening which was attended by a number of his contemporaries, including Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Ranjit and many others.

Vinod Khanna had acted in more than 100 films in his career. He shocked everyone in the 1980s, when at the peak of his career, he quit the glamorous world of Bollywood to join Osho’s ashram. In an old interview with TOI Vinod had talked about all the ups and downs of his life.

There was a time when Vinod did not work on Sunday to spend time with family. In 1975, Khanna became a disciple of Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). In the early 1980s, he moved to Rajneeshpuram, Osho’s commune in the United States, for about five years, cleaning dishes and working as Osho’s gardener.

In an interview with TIO he revealed about reason behind left the industry an join Osho. He told ”I have always been a seeker. In the film industry, I had money, glamour, fame but wondered now what? Initially, I visited Osho’s ashram in Pune every weekend. I even diverted shooting schedules to Pune. I was finally initiated on December 31, 1975. When I announced my retirement from films, nobody believed me.”

But slowly, as days went by, directors confided that Khanna had stalled all his new projects indefinitely. Producers confirmed that Vinod Khanna was returning signing amounts. This was serious.
