Recently, a woman who claims to be the daughter of Congress politician and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s late son, Sanjay Gandhi, has sent a legal notice to director Bhandarkar, producer Bharat Shah, Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Information & Broadcasting, and Pahlaj Nihalani, the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), to stop the movie from releasing.

In a 4-page legal notice, the lady, Priya Singh Paul, a resident of Gurugram says that she has learnt from well wishers that “Shri Sanjay Gandhi and Smt Indira Gandhi are shown in roles without accurate or insufficient historical data and apprehends that they may be shown in poor light and therefore its release should be stopped…” till she is shown the film. The recipients of this startling legal notice have been given a week to respond.

While Bhandarkar refused to comment, Nihalani expresses bafflement over the content of the legal notice. He was quoted as saying, “We had no idea Shri Sanjay Gandhi had another child besides Varun Gandhi. The notice says Ms Priya Paul Singh is Shri Sanjay Gandhi’s ‘biological child’. It further says that this matter has come to light recently. We are not sure the Gandhi parivar is aware of this new family member. But unless the family acknowledges Ms Singh’s claims, we can’t act on her objections to ‘Indu Sarkar’.”

The film is releasing on July 28 starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Kriti Kulhari in the lead roles.
