Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Anand’ co-star Sumita Sanyal passes away at the age of 71

Veteran actress Sumita Sanyal, who has worked in several films including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna-starrer ‘Anand’, died Sunday afternoon. She was 71. The actress breathed her last at her Kolkata residence at Deshapriyo Park.

The actress’ family revealed that she was suffering from old-age related medical issues, said PTI. According to family sources, Sanyal, who was ailing for sometime now, suffered a cardiac arrest around 10.30am and did not survive it.

Sanyal was married to film editor Subodh Roy, and had acted in over 30 Bengali films, including the Dilip Kumar starrer “Sagina Mahato” in 1971.

Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee offered her condolences to the actress` family via Twitter.She tweeted, “Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans.”

Born Manjula Sanyal in Darjeeling (Bengal Presidency of British India), Sumita has worked in around 50 Bengali films and was also part of Hindi films like ‘Guddi’, ‘Mili’, ‘Aashirwad’ and ‘Mere Apne’.

 Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee also condoled Ms Sanyal’s death, writing: “Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. May her soul rest in peace.”

Sumita was married to film editor Subodh Roy and is survived by a son.
