Television show Pehredaar Piya Ki was infamous for its plotline from the start, actually even before it started. 20 days later, public sentiment about the TV show, in which a 10-year-old boy is married to an 18-year-old woman (because he needs to be protected), remain the same. A petition on change.org addressed to Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Cabinet Minister of Textiles and Information and Broadcasting (Additional Charge), called for a ban on the show.
The petition was posted by a viewer named, Mansi Jain on Change.org and needs 50,000 signatures. At the time of this story being published, 49,859 people had already signed it. So it just needs 141 more signatures so that an action can be taken. The petition read, “Pehredar piya ki. – A 10 year old impressionable little kid(” piyaa”) caressing and stalking a lady who’s more than double his age and filling sindoor in her “maang” is being telecasted at prime time -8:30pm on sony. (Family time) It is to be devoured by the entire Nation. Imagine the kind of influence it will steadily and perpetually infuse in the viewers mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be infuenced by such tv serials. Join us in signing the petition to ban this serial. (sic).”
In recent episodes, the couple was sent into a room for their suhagraat and will soon leave for a honeymoon in London.

Pehredaar Piya Ki aired its first episode two weeks ago. It tells the story of the young prince who is put under the care and security of his adult wife. Even the promos got a lot of flak for showing a romantic relationship between a child and an adult. The trailer showed child actor Afaan Khan put vermillion on Tejaswi Prakash, causing a furore among viewers.
Of course the star cast defended the show, and Tejaswi even went on to say “it’s progressive.” People gave it a chance, but things took a turn for worse when the makers introduced a ‘suhagraat’ sequence and a proposed London honeymoon for Diya and Ratan. This is when the petition was started and we are sure it will cross the 50,000 mark in just a few minutes because it is going viral with everyone supporting the ban on the show.
Ever since the show’s first promos aired on television in July, tele-viewers were outraged by the theme and alleged that the show propagates the idea of child marriage (an issue which has been critiqued by soaps like Balika Vadhu and Gangaa). After the initial few episodes aired, actor Karan Wahi slammed the makers for “selling stupidity in the name of content which gives TRP.” Cast member Suyyash Rai defended the show and said in an Instagram post: “But this doesn’t change the fact that we, the whole team of Pehredaar Piya Ki love this show and we all have worked really hard for it.”
