After the death last week of actor-turned-BJP MP Vinod Khanna, the Gurdaspur seat in Punjab needs another Bollywood name to represent it in Parliament. The BJP is working on finding the “right person”.
Among the names being tossed around is that of Akshay Kumar. “He has a clean image and has been doing a lot of patriotic movies in the recent past. He is the new age Mr Bharat,” was the contention of the leader who proposed Akshay Kumar’s name.
Rishi Kapoor is being considered, but he “talks too much on Twitter, though he will be good for the masses. Besides, there has been no one from the Kapoor family in politics and it is high time someone does,” according to one viewpoint.
Both Akshay Kumar and Rishi Kapoor have supported several of the causes espoused by the Centre. In particular, Akshay Kumar’s suggestion led to the CRPF starting a website featuring information of its martyrs so that donors could help them out.

Apart from them, Raveena Tandon, Sunny Deol and also Kavita Khanna — wife of late Vinod Khanna — are doing the rounds as probables for the vacant Lok Sabha seat, BJP sources claim the nominee is most likely to be someone from among party cadres — someone who is supported by the sangathan (organisation) and the sangh (RSS).
Amid of all such rumours, Akshay Kumar has denied rumours that he is in contention for fighting by-elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab.
“Absolutely not true,” is how 49-year-old Akshay reacted when we asked him if there’s any truth in reports that he may be set to join politics. “I don’t know where these reports are even coming from. I am shooting near Mumbai for my film Padman, blissfully away from the rumour mills,” adds Akshay.
Akshay Kumar, who won the National Award for Best Actor in Delhi on Wednesday, is currently in news for supporting several social causes, including setting up a crowd-funding platform bharatkeveer.gov.in with the Ministry of Home Affairs, to facilitate financial aid to the families of martyred soldiers.
