In 2009, Tiwari contested elections for the 15th Lok Sabha as a candidate for the Samajwadi Party in the Gorakhpur constituency. He won the North East Delhi (Lok Sabha constituency) in the 2014 Indian general elections from BJP.

Prior to Tiwari’s involvement in cinema, he had spent ten years working as a singer. In 2003, he took a role in the film ‘Sasura Bada Paise Wala’. The Bihar Jharkhand Motion Picture Association saw this production as being a turning point for Bhojpuri cinema.

He followed this with the successful films ‘Daroga Babu I Love You’ and ‘Bandhan Toote Na’. The BBC reported in 2005 that Tiwari and Ravi Kishan were the biggest male stars in the flourishing Bhojpuri cinema market and that Tiwari was able to charge US$ 90,000 per film. Now Manoj looks less in Bhojpuri films. After the Lok Sabha elections, he become more active in politics.

Manoj’s father’s name is Chandreda Tiwari, while the mother’s name is Lalita Devi. Manoj has some six siblings. He was born in a government hospital in Varanasi. After this his mother went to Atarwaliya (village). This is where Manoj has started his studies. After this he went to Varanasi for further studies. After coming here, he did intermediate from Model Service Inter College. Then in 1992, he did BA (Hons) from Banaras Hindu University and then MPED in 1994.

Manoj’s elder brother Sadhu Sharan Tiwari wished that his brother became a famous singer. Manoj had told during an interview that his elder brother had once heard him singing in Ramlila, only then he believe that Manoj could become a singer. He told that the elder brother had mode his first album Ram Bhajan in 1992 and he also did the first stage show.
