The HC set aside the trial court order awarding him seven years jail term for allegedly raping a US researcher. The court directed that Farooqi, who is presently in jail, be released forthwith.

During the hearing, the Delhi High Court bench gave a benefit of doubt to the accused after questioning the authenticity of the accusation. The bench questioned the victim whether the whole incident happened with or without consent. The court even asked the accused if he understood that there was no consent from the victim’s end or not? After considering both the sides of the story, Mahmood was acquitted of all charges.
It was on June 19, 2015, when the police had lodged an FIR against Farooqui on the woman’s complaint, after which he was arrested. Then on July 29, 2015, the police had filed its chargesheet against Farooqui that alleged he had raped the woman from Columbia University on March 28, 2015 at his Sukhdev Vihar house in South Delhi.
Farooqui directed ‘Peepli Live’ with his wife, Anusha Rizvi. The film was released in 2010.
