A Valliyur court in Tirunelveli has summoned actor Kamal Haasan to appear before it on May 5. This after a PIL was filed by members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi last month against Kamal Haasan for allegedly making derogatory comments about the Mahabharata.

Kamal Haasan in an interview to a Tamil channel, reportedly said while referring to The Mahabharata, that a woman is gambled away in the epic and that India honours such a book.

The actor had said, “In Mahabharata, Panchali was used as a pawn while the men gambled. She was used as a collateral and India is a country that respects and honours a book that revolves around men using a woman to gamble away as if she was a mere object.”

Following this, the members of Hindu Makkal Katchi had filed a PIL at Valliyur court in Tirunelveli. A complaint was also filed by them at the Chennai City Police Commissionerate on March 15. The Akila Hindu Mahasabha also filed a complaint against the actor with the Collector in Coimbatore last month.

While speaking to Hindustan Times, President of  HMK said, “Kamal Haasan has been repeatedly taking an anti-Hindu stand and it has increased during the recent times. He has needlessly criticised Mahabharat, which is a revered epic of the Hindus along with Ramayana. Can he dare to talk in an insulting manner about Islam or Christianity and Bible and Quran? There will be a massive campaign against Kamal Haasan if he does not apologize and withdraw his comments. Actually he has been a serial offender and we demand action be taken against him.”
