The film will show how Rajiv, scion to India’s ruling political family found love in the daughter of a soldier from Italy who dreamt of learning English and being a flight attendant.

It’s a story of conviction and determined love as two young people from disparate corners of the world, meet and fight family apprehension and cultural differences to make a life together.

The actor has admitted that funding the short film will take away most of his earnings from Naagin 2. The actor comes from a producer’s family so it is nothing new for him.

In a statement to the publication, Karanvir said, “It’s a tribute to Sonia and Rajiv Ji’s love story, but it’s fiction, neither it has any political agenda nor is at an attempt to grab eye balls. It is a simple story which is made to create a different content for audience.”

“I was going browsing through the net and happened to see Rendezvous With Simi Garewal with late Mr Rajiv Gandhi ji… I was so mesmerized by the way he spoke and the way he carried himself with such elegance….the way he would speak about Sonia Gandhi ji, the way they met and how he geared up the courage to ask permission from his mother… the Prime Minister then, Mrs Indira Gandhiji. That’s where my film ends. They call it the Eric Segal love story of India. It’s my tribute to him and to all the people in love. A reaffirmation that true love exists” he further added.

He also added “It is a tribute to love & peace worldwide. I am an actor and my job is to act but sometimes you come across a idea and you don’t want to wait for someone to back it. This is one such product, may be few year ago it would have been difficult to take such step. But now, thanks to the growing reach of internet, it is easy to showcase one’s creativity so I took this step. I’ve always been fascinated with classic love stories of the 50’s and the 60’s. They don’t white such stories or make such movies anymore.”

Rajiv, the older son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and an aspiring pilot, was studying engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge, in the early 1960s. He met Sonia at a restaurant frequented by students and most reports say it didn’t take the attractive two to fall in love. When Rajiv finally arrives to the Maino home in Orbassano, he makes it clear he wishes to marry Sonia.

The Maino family, especially Sonia’s father was not too keen on the alliance. It was her brother who attended their simple wedding at the lawns of the Gandhi residence.

‘Ijazat’, will release on YouTube in Indian and Italian version. Priya Banerjee, who was last seen in ‘Jazbaa’, has been roped in to play Sonia Maino. The actress instantly said yes to the project after hearing the story and concept. She said, “It was very sudden & pleasant for me, when Karanvir came and asked me to be part, I could not refuse. It is a beautiful concept.”
