Bollywood singer Kailash Kher who is known for his hit numbers might be in trouble as lyricist of the theme song of Gorakhpur Mahotsav titled ‘Nath Yogi’ Vimal Bawra says that he will file a defamation case against the singer Kailash Kher, who accused him of copying his ‘Adi Yogi’ tune and lyrics.

The song ‘Nath Yogi’ is dedicated to Nath sect, to which CM Yogi belongs. The six-minute Nath Yogi song, which praises Gorakhpur for its vivid culture and great personalities, will be played during the three-day Gorakhpur Mahotsav, to be held from January 11.

A sufi singer from Gazipur, Bawra, whose son has sung the theme song, in turn accused Kher of copying Bhojpuri numbers.

Vimal Bawra said that the tune of his song ‘Nath Yogi’ is based on Bhojpuri folk that he had heard from a beggar woman more than 30 years ago.

He also said that the ‘Nath Yogi’ is a original composition and not a copy. “I am consulting my legal advisor for a case of defamation against false allegations. If anyone has to say anything against my ‘Nath Yogi’ theme song of the Gorakhpur Mahotsav, he should go to court and I will answer him there,” Bawra told reporters here yesterday.

“The only similarity between the two songs is the word ‘Yogi’ which is associated with the ‘Nath cult’ and no one can write a ‘Nath cult’ song without using the word ‘Yogi’ or ‘Jogi’,” he added.

“A raga is not subject to copyright,” he added. “I don’t want to take anybody’s name, but this kind of attitude against my 19-year-old son is surprising. Moreover, the song is for a great event – the Gorakhpur Mahotsav – and not for any commercial purpose,” he said. Bawra claimed Kher was envious because the song had become popular.

“This is least expected of a great artiste like him,” he added.

Kailash Kher alleged earlier this week that tune and some of the words of the mahotsav theme song were similar to the one that he had performed last year.
