Snapchat is in the news in India for all the wrong reasons. #UninstallSnapchat is trending big and apparently Google Play Store ratings for the app have fallen.

Evan Spiegel

The reason is a former Snapchat employee has alleged that the social media company’s chief executive officer Evan Spiegel was disinterested to expand the business to “poor countries” like India. American news website Variety quoted the ex-employee, Anthony Pompliano, as saying that Spiegel told him that the popular app is “only for rich people”, which has led to severe backlash in India.

“The app is only for rich people. I don’t want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain,” Mr Spiegel reportedly told Mr Pompliano.

This one comment had the entire country fuming as avid Snapchat users started deleting the app and soon we have the hashtag #boycottsnapchat trending.

While we have the commoners deleting the app, even our celebs aren’t far behind. Many celebs too have not taken the remark in a positive light and have reacted over it. Have a look at their tweets below:

Snapchat has rubbished the allegations, according to various reports.

“The simple fact is that he (Mr Pompliano) knows nothing about Snap’s current metric,” the company’s attorneys reacted, according to Variety.

Snapchat may not be as big as Facebook or WhatsApp in India, but is quite popular. According to several media reports, Snapchat’s user based in India is around 4 million. Currently, Snapchat is under immense pressure to improvise as its several iconic features are being ripped off by social networking giants – Facebook and Instagram.
