After winning accolades for her Marathi film ‘Ventilator’, Priyanka Chopra has again taken up one more challenge as a producer. Now, PeeCee’s company will be producing a film helmed by the renowned National Award director Ujjwal Chatterjee.

The film will be based on the relationship between Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and his English teacher Annapurna Turkhud and their infatuation for each other.

However, this bold yet sensitive story line has upset the members of Visva Bharati University, Kolkata.

The members have objected to the two kissing scenes included in the movie – one where the tutor shares a kiss with Tagore and the other where she kisses a suitor in front of Tagore. The members requested the director of the said film Ujjwal Chatterjee to delete the scenes. Failing to adhere to their demand, the committee claims to move the court for the same.

Speaking to IANS, Chatterjee said, “I have agreed with Visva Bharati’s recommendations on removing intimate scenes. I am removing one scene. There are no problems regarding the decisions of the committee formed by the varsity to look into the authenticity of research. The shooting will commence in November this year, and will take place in Shantiniketan, Jorasanko and Maharashtra.”

On the other hand, acting Vice Chancellor of Visva Bharati University Swapan Kumar Datta told the news agency that the subject needs to be treated delicately and that they are awaiting the final script with the requisite alterations.

For the uninitiated, Annapurna Turkhud, also known as Anna or Annabai, was Mumbai-based doctor Atmaram Pandurang Turkud’s daughter. Annapurna and Tagore first met under the pretext of learning spoken English from Anna before he left for his first voyage to Britain in 1878. It seems he lived with her family for a brief while before leaving for Britain. He also took inspiration from her for his initial poetic expressions. He used to call her Nalini, which she used as a pen name to write her poems. The film will depict the non-physical relationship between the two, with Chatterjee deciding to delete the intimate scene.

The movie will release in Marathi, Bengali and English.
