Sidharth Malhotra’s ‘A Gentleman’ already released on theater, and like any other movie star he has been promoting it through his Twitter handle for the past few days.

However, something that he posted in the afternoon today has really caught everyone’s eye. The actor put out a tweet asking everyone in Haryana to stay safe (because of the impending judgement on self-proclaimed saint Guru Ram Rahim Singh over rape accusations) and watch his film.

Violence erupted in certain parts of the country when Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was found guilty of raping two ‘sadhvis’ (female followers) by the CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana. Things got heated up when his followers blocked roads, set fire to trains, buses and even destroyed media vans.

While Bollywood usually steers clear of passing a comment on such issues, actor Sidharth Malhotra, whose new film opened in theatres today, couldn’t resist the urge to, well, stay shut.

This didn’t go down well with many who started to voice their anger. Here are some tweets:

However, Sidharth later clarified his afternoon tweets. He says they were made before the verdict came on Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Widespread cases of violence and arson were reported after the he was declared a convict in rape case.

“To people who are commenting on my morning tweets, they were made before the verdict ! Thoughts n prayers,” Sid added later. The actor probably had a good intention for his country but sadly his choice of words went wrong.

We hope this clarification will stop a the criticism for the actor now. Sidharth Malhotra’s A Gentleman released to lukewarm reviews on Friday.

On the work front, Sidharth is presently also shooting for Aiyaari, where he will be sharing the screen with Manoj Bajpayee for the first time.
