Last year in April, singer Sonu Nigam’s tweets against the use of loudspeakers for the azaan in mosques sparked a huge controversy in the country. People slammed the singer for his comment.
When the singer raised an objection on the Muslim Azaan on the microblogging site Twitter, many religious groups had lashed out at him.
Now, lyricist Javed Akhtar has jumped in support of Nigam. Akhtar has urged people to not use loudspeakers in mosques.

On Wednesday, Akhtar wrote on Twitter, “This is to put on record that I totally agree with all those including Sonu Nigam who want that Loud speakers should not be used by the mosques and for that matter by any place of worship in residential areas.”

Earlier in April, Nigam, in a series of tweets had criticised the use of loudspeakers for religious purposes.
Nigam had faced much flak for his comments, and a fatwa was issued against him by an imam Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi who is from West Bengal. He had also offered Rs 10 lakh to anyone who would shave Nigam’s head.
Nigam continued to defend his tweets and held a press conference and in this dramatic press conference he went ahead and got his head shaved.
