Star Cast: Swara Bhaskar, Pankaj Tripathy, Sanjai Mishra, Ishtiyak Khan

Director: Avinash Das

Producer: Priya and Sandiip Kapur

Music: Rohit Sharma

Rating: 3/5*

After her powerful performance in ‘Pink’, Swara Bhaskar is all set to return in a never-seen-before avatar in ‘Anarkali of Arrah’. Ara, or ‘Arrah’, as the film puts it, has been a sensitive district and the headquarters of Bhojpur, some 80 km west of Patna and is represented by BJP parliamentarian RK Singh, a former Union home secretary.

Anaarkali of Arrah

Story of the movie:

Anarkali of Arrah narrates the story of a singer (played by Swara) hailing from Arrah, Bihar, and is popular for her erotic songs. She is the star performer of her group and for this, Rangeela (Pankaj Tripathi) accompanies him. However, her life takes a twist when she has a confrontation with a very powerful man of the region, followed by a serious conflict. The story goes from Bihar to Delhi.  Anarkali opens a front against the VC. How she fights the misogynist beliefs of the society, forms the crux of the film.

Direction of the film:

Debutant director Avinash Das is a brave new voice with a refreshing take on women and their sexuality. There is ample of double-meaning in the songs and dialogues as well, but one has to really laud Das for no where making it vulgar or uncomfortable for the audience. The film has been edited in a very smart manner as well. The film’s story seems very raw and real.

Star-cast Performance

Swara Bhaskar

Swara Bhaskar as the uninhibited Anarkali is electrifying. Be it when she sings innuendo laden folk songs and matches her thumkas with the beats or when she plunges headlong into the battle to protect herself. She justify her character.

Sanjay Mishra

Sanjay Mishra as the lecherous, VC gives another fine performance. Without making his villainous act over dramatic, Mishra keeps it to basic but effective enough.

Pankaj Tripathi

Pankaj Tripathi as Rangeela is simply superb. Who knew he could dance so well? Yes, Tripathi has some killer moves. Apart from that, his natural act works its magic.

Ishtiyak Khan

Ishtiyak Khan who gave a brilliant performance in ‘Phass Gaye Re Obama’ as the English Teacher, is the second best actor in this film. His track with Anaarkali’s character is also on the film’s lines. Khan delivers a superlative performance as the good-at heart lover of Anaarkali, who also respects her talent.

Music of the film:

Rohit Sharma’s music is a key element in this film and it has been impressively composed bringing in the true ‘Bhojpuri’ flavor. Ramkumar Singh, Dr. Sagar and Ravinder Randhawa have worked on the lyrics.

Final Verdict:

‘Anaarkali Of Aarah’ is a must-watch for Swara Bhasker and the supporting cast’s power-packed performances.
