In 1994, Manoj started his filmy career following his one-minute role in Govind Nihalani’s Drohkaal. After that he acted in the biographical drama Bandit Queen (1994). He got recognized in 1998 by Ram Gopal Varma’s film ‘Satya’. Bajpayee essayed the role of gangster Bhiku Mhatre, who accompanies the title character to form their nexus in the Mumbai underworld.

Manoj won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his performance. After this Manoj started getting offers for films. After that he did various films like Kaun, Shool, Aks and Road.
