Yes, Dara Singh was the first actor to play Hanuman on television. But he became so popular with this role, that people started worshiping him as Hanuman.

Dara has got this role coincidentally. In 1986, when Ramanand Sagar was casting his show, he called Dara and said, “Dara, you are playing Hanuman in my new TV serial.”

Dara Singh had earlier refused to do the roll by saying, “Sagar Saab, I am almost 60, cast a younger guy.”

But Ramanand Sagar did not listen to Dara and said, “You are perfect for the role of Hanuman.”

When Dara Singh played the role of Hanuman in ‘Ramayan’, then people starts consider him as a real Hanuman. Then, there came a time when Dara Singh’s photograph in his Hanuman avatar was placed in temples across Umargaon.
