As the S S Rajamouli’s magnum opus ‘Bahubali’ saga continues on the box office, here are some amazing facts about the real Baahubali. Baahubali means a man with strong arms and the title of the SS Rajamouli-directed movie is inspired from the name of son of Adinath, the first tirthankara of Jainism who is a much revered figure among Jains.

1.Baahubali, who was born in the Ikshvaku dynasty in Ayodhya, was one of the 100 sons of Rishabhanatha and Sunanda. He is said to have excelled in studying medicine, archery, floriculture, and the knowledge of precious gems.

2. When Rishabhanatha decided to become a monk, he distributed his kingdom among his 100 sons. Bharata was gifted the kingdom of Vinita (Ayodhya) and Bahubali got the kingdom of Asmaka from South India, having Podanapur as its capital.

3. After winning six divisions of earth in all directions (digvijaya), Bharata proceeded to his capital Ayodhyapuri. After seeing his victory, his 98 brothers submitted their kingdoms to him and became Jain monks. Bahubali was endowed with the superior body of extraordinary sturdiness and strength and challenged Bharata. The two had a fight and Bahubali won it over his elder brother Bharata.

4. After the fight, Bahubali was filled with disgust at the world and developed a desire for renunciation. Bahubali abandoned his clothes and kingdom to become a Digambara monk and began meditating with great resolve to attain omniscience (Kevala Jnana).

5. Baahubali meditated motionless in a standing posture for a year and climbing plants grew around his legs during this period. But he was adamant and continued his practice unmindful of the vines, ants, and dust that enveloped his body.

6. Bahubali was then able to destroy the four kinds of inimical karmas, including the knowledge obscuring karma, and he attained omniscience (kevala jnana). He was now revered as an omniscient being (Kevali). Bahubali finally attained liberation (moksha) and became a pure, liberated soul (siddha)

7. The monolithic statue of Bahubali at Shravanabelagola, located 158 km (98 mi) from Bangalore, was carved from a single block of granite. It was built in and around 981 A.D. and is one of the largest free-standing statues in the world.

8. Tall statues of Baahubali are also situated in other places like Karkala, Dharmastala, Venur, Gommatagiri, Kumbhoj, Arthipura.
