My in-laws Geetha, Vaidehi and Sharath are responsible for my death. They should be punished for making me take this extreme step… If I spoke a word they would tell me to get out of the house. Sharath was so stubborn, he never listened to me. I do not want to die in my husband’s house. If they are not be punished, my soul will not rest. Please bury or cremate my body in our native KR Pete and let my brother Sachin conduct the last rites. Amma, do not feel (bad) for me. Take care of Sachin who will be with you.”

Sachin told The New Indian Express, “Sharath had met my sister in a cultural programme and sent some of his relatives to talk about marriage. Both families agreed and the wedding was held in July 2018. Police should arrest the accused soon. We need justice”.
All the three accused in the case are absconding ever since the news of Sushmitha’s death got circulated. The singer’s mother, Meenakshi, registered a case of dowry death under IPC Section 304B at the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station. In her statement to the police, the woman’s mother mentioned that it was she who forced her to get married to Sharath while her daughter wasn’t ready for the marriage. She added that she had spent over Rs 20 lakh on the wedding and also gave 150 grams of gold to Sushmitha and Sharath. The mother said she had a tough time making arrangements for the wedding and Sushmitha was aware of the struggle – that’s the reason she didn’t want to inform her about the dowry harassment she was being subjected to.
The police are now on a hunt for the accused.
